Joyce Oluoch

Joyce Oluoch aged 34 years is a beneficiary of the garden tower project in Siaya.

Before the garden tower project, Joyce made a livelihood from small scale farming and selling of cereals especially maize. This was challenge as she did not have enough space to plants adequate maize and beans and the cereals also sold well in certain seasons only.

On a monthly basis she would earn a profit of 600ksh (around $5)from the cereals sales. When Joyce got the garden tower, it was a turning point for her life. She was able to grow vegetables in a small space and harvest a lot to feed her family and sell the surplus.

"I have taken good care of my garden tower and harvest vegetables thrice a week, which I am able to feed the family for a meal or two daily and sell surplus."

Currently Joyce makes a profit of 200ksh ($2 US) daily and has used the savings to expand her business and now sell other vegetables and fruits besides Sukuma wiki (kales.) This has helped her provide a balanced diet for her child whom initially was malnourished because she could not afford a balance meal, but now he is very healthy and she is able to adequately pay for his school items and levies.

"I am grateful to the 100H for making me a proud mother of a healthy baby with bright future."

Impact: Joyce has increased her income from $5 per MONTH to $60 per month using the garden towers. She is able to feed her family vegetables each week, and sell the surplus to help her family thrive. The Garden Tower grows more food in less space with more variety to sell.
