MARY AUMA

Meet Mama Mary Auma aged 39, a beneficiary of the garden tower project in Siaya County.

Mary has a family of 13 members with 10 school-going children. She is a hard-working woman who used to do casual jobs like digging and weeding farms to as a livelihood.

This however was not enough to meet the family needs and only made at most ksh 500 ($3.50 US) a month while as at times she would spend days without any forthcoming jobs and her children would as a result miss most of the meals and school due to pending school levies.

She ventured into selling fruits and vegetables and would make a daily profit of between ksh50 to 100 before the garden tower project inception. When Mary got recruited to the Garden tower program, she received 3 garden towers. This was a huge boost to her business!

She has then been able to sell vegetables and make daily profits of between ksh 200 to 300 ($2-3 US), saved money and expanded her vegetable vending business to include a variety of fruits, vegetables and potatoes as value addition. She recently acquired a countertop for selling locally made French fries out of vegetable sales and the business is doing pretty well given the business skill mentorship.

“Recently I paid school fees amounting to Kenya shillings 15,000 ($108) from proceeds of the garden tower initiative. I believe with this project, families can adequately meet their needs and afford basic education for their children.” - Mary

Impact: Mary has increased her daily income from an average of $1 per day to $3 per day by increasing the amount and type of vegetables she can sell with the garden tower. She has been able to pay for her children's school fees, and expanded her business to selling french fries.
