In December 2022, Jonathan and Alicia Decker and their family visited the Maasai Mara over the Holidays. Alicia went out with our project team and identified 12 springs that could possibly be protected in the 3 communities we work in.
Our March expedition team decided to protect two at once that would provide clean water to 500 families, 4 schools, and the Nkoilale Health Centre.
It was a huge endeavor, and required piping the water 13 kilometers to the driest region in our communities where women had to walk the furthest.
We were able to attend the ceremony to kick-off the water kiosk during our expedition and celebrate with the community.
Because we have the Emparnat Cultural Centre and Kokoo's Guest House on the Maasai Mara, it's very important to us that we are doing what we can to empower families with sustainable food, clean water, education, and health. Our goal is to continue to fundraise and look for ways to improve the lives of the Maasai people we serve.
Impact: Instead of walking for 5 kilometers to access dirty and contaminated water in the river, 500 families are now able to access clean water within 1.5 kilometers. They are also safe from the big game animals in the area such as elephants, cape buffalo, and lions.
