Oyugis community was initiated approximately 2years ago. We started with 20 families in a small portion of land that my dad gave us. We faced a lot of challenges from explaining what the program entailed. There is a lack of material, lack of knowledge, and water and seedling scarcity.
My cohort group would move 2km down the steep to fetch water for our seedlings and young plants in the farm. We tried our best and some dropped off the way, since their expectation were not met.
Around December 2022,I got information from Heidi over a group called WHOLives drilling water using a hand drawn drill and working in Nyakach the neighboring county.
This was kind of a breather following water challenges I had during drought . We got connected and a team was sent to our farm for survey and by February 8th the crew started drilling a borehole worth 450000ksh ($4000 US).
The community around us is about 200 households, and they were very happy about the water. It took the crew quite some time to hit the water and thank God through prayers it happened. Something that we thought would not work after a lot of obstacles of our area being rocky. The connection were done thereafter, pillar built ,and 5000 gallon tank bought and fitted.
The members sat down and because this was a loan, we agreed to be paying ksh. 100 to 200 ($50 cents to $1) every month both to pay electricity bill and to pay back the drilling cost. I am also sweet talking some families around to see if we can extend the piping in their homesteads since its clean and safe water. We agreed they will be paying ksh. 500 per month ($4 US).
Impact: Over the past year and a half, our teams in Oyugis have built over 1000 garden towers. They have developed a huge community garden where families can come and help in exchange for income when the vegetables are sold. A water storage capture system and a borehole have been drilled to provide clean water to the families, as well as a spring protection project.
