When Is the Best Time to Visit Kenya?

Kenya's dry and rainy seasons month by month, when the wildebeest migration reaches the Maasai Mara, and how to pick dates for a humanitarian trip.

    Quick Answer

Kenya has two dry seasons and two rainy seasons. The most popular windows are late June through October and January through February — dry roads, comfortable days, and, from roughly July through October, the wildebeest migration in the Maasai Mara. For humanitarian work specifically, the shoulder months are excellent: fewer tourists, lower prices, and communities are often in greater need right after a poor rainy season. 100 Humanitarians runs expeditions year round, with a November 5–15, 2026 departure currently open.

    • Dry seasons: late June–October and January–February. These are peak travel months.
    • Long rains fall roughly March–May; short rains fall roughly November–December.
    • The wildebeest migration reaches the Maasai Mara around July through October.
    • Shoulder months mean fewer crowds, lower prices, and green landscapes.
    • Days are warm and nights in the Mara are genuinely cold — pack layers regardless of month.

    What are Kenya's seasons?

Kenya sits on the equator, so it does not have summer and winter in the way most travelers expect. It has rain patterns. The long rains run roughly March through May. The short rains run roughly November into December. The two dry stretches — late June through October, and January through February — are when most visitors come.

Altitude matters more than latitude here. Nairobi and the Maasai Mara sit high enough that days are warm rather than hot and nights can drop into the 50s Fahrenheit. Layers are not optional in any month.

When does the wildebeest migration reach the Maasai Mara?

The herds typically cross into the Mara from the Serengeti around July and stay through October before moving south again. Exact timing follows the rain and shifts year to year, so no one can promise a river crossing on a given date. If seeing the migration matters most to you, aim for August or September and treat it as a strong likelihood rather than a guarantee.

What is the best month for a humanitarian trip specifically?

Different answer than the safari one. Project work — building garden towers, placing 1,000-liter rainwater tanks, distributing HopeKits, visiting schools — is doable in every month. What changes is need and access. After a weak rainy season, food and water pressure on families is at its highest, which is often exactly when a team is most useful.

Rain affects roads more than it affects the work. Our in-country team plans routes around conditions, and the itinerary flexes. See what a Kenya humanitarian trip costs for how a typical ten-day expedition is structured.

How do crowds and prices change by season?

    • July–October: peak season. Best migration odds, highest lodge prices, most vehicles in the Mara.
    • January–February: dry, hot, excellent general game viewing, moderate crowds.
    • March–May: long rains. Green, dramatic, quiet, cheapest. Some roads get difficult.
    • November–December: short rains. Brief afternoon showers, fewer tourists, birdlife is at its best.

When are 100 Humanitarians' next expeditions?

Our next open departure is November 5–15, 2026. Upcoming dates and registration are at trips.100humanitarians.org. Groups are small and seats close early. If you cannot travel this year, a gift still puts a garden tower or a water tank with a family this season.
