Year-End Giving: How to Make Your December 31 Donation Count

A practical year-end giving guide: the December 31 deadline, what qualifies, crypto and stock gifts, employer matching, and exactly what each amount funds in Kenya.

    Quick Answer

To claim a charitable deduction for the current tax year, your gift must be completed by December 31. Online card gifts count on the date they are charged, mailed checks count by postmark, and stock or crypto transfers need to settle before year-end, so start those in early December. 100 Humanitarians International is a 501(c)(3), EIN 82-1048388, and gifts made through our Zeffy forms carry zero platform fees, so the full amount reaches the program you choose.

    • Deadline: December 31, in the donor's time zone, for card and online gifts.
    • Mailed checks count by postmark date, not the date received.
    • Stock and crypto transfers should be started by early December to settle in time.
    • EIN 82-1048388 — a registered 501(c)(3); receipts are emailed automatically.
    • Zero platform fees on our donation forms: $25 given is $25 delivered.
    • Many employers match year-end gifts, often doubling them.

When is the deadline for a year-end charitable donation?

December 31. A credit or debit card gift counts for the tax year in which it is charged, even if the statement arrives in January. A mailed check counts by its postmark date, so a check postmarked December 31 still qualifies even if it is received in the new year.

The exceptions worth planning for are transfers: appreciated stock, donor-advised fund grants, and cryptocurrency all depend on the transfer settling before year-end. Brokerages slow down in late December. Start those in the first week of the month.

What qualifies as a deductible year-end gift?

Cash, card, check, ACH, appreciated securities, cryptocurrency, and qualified charitable distributions from an IRA all qualify when given to a registered 501(c)(3). 100 Humanitarians International is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, EIN 82-1048388, verifiable on the IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search.

What generally does not qualify: the value of volunteer hours, the cost of expedition travel, and the fair market value of anything you receive in exchange for a gift. Full detail on deductibility and receipts. This page is general information, not tax advice.

Should I give crypto or appreciated stock instead of cash?

Often, yes. Donating an appreciated asset you have held more than a year can let you deduct the full fair market value while avoiding the capital gains tax you would owe on a sale. That makes the same out-of-pocket cost produce a larger gift.

We accept cryptocurrency directly through our Every.org crypto page. For stock or a donor-advised fund grant, email us and we will send transfer instructions. Confirm the specifics with your own tax advisor.

Will my employer match a year-end gift?

Many will, and most matching portals close in early January for the prior year. Search your company's giving portal for "100 Humanitarians International" or the EIN 82-1048388, submit the match request with your receipt, and a $250 gift can become $500 without costing you anything more. It is the single most overlooked way to double a December donation.

What does a year-end gift actually fund in Kenya?

Every gift is designated to a program, and our donation forms carry no platform fees, so the amount you give is the amount that goes to work.

    • $15 — one HopeKit, covering two to three years of a girl's menstrual supplies and keeping her in class.
    • $25 — one Garden Tower feeding a family of five year-round.
    • $150 — one 1,000-liter rainwater tank placed at a family's home.
    • $1,000 — a protected spring serving 500 to 1,000 people for decades.
    • $5,000 — a Skills Development Center training 50 to 200 women a year.

See the accounting in where does my donation go, or give now on the donate page.

Is a monthly gift better than a one-time year-end gift?

For us, yes — predictable monthly income is what lets communities plan installations, order materials in bulk, and commit to school fees for a full year. A $15 monthly gift through 100 Women of Hope provides a HopeKit every month. If you are deciding in December, starting monthly now still produces a deductible gift this year and a stronger program next year.
